This short documentary series delves into the minds of the world’s greatest perfumers. Hosted by fragrance publisher Frédéric Malle, each episode is a visual poem that uses a Proustian-like questionnaire to go beyond the notes of a scent and into the wellspring of an artist’s inspiration. The films reveal how memory, emotion, and personal history are the true ingredients behind iconic fragrances.
Featured Nose:
Jean-Claude Ellena: A minimalist master whose work has been compared to watercolor sketches and chamber music. Born into a perfumer’s family in Grasse, Ellena believes that a scent should be a soft caress that never shouts. He is a founding member of the Osmothèque, a scent archive dedicated to preserving fragrance history, and his iconic career includes a long tenure as the in-house perfumer for Hermès. His notable creations include Angéliques sous la Pluie for Frédéric Malle and Terre d’Hermès.
